The mission of the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) is to protect and preserve South Dakota's agriculture, environment, and natural resources. A successful applicant will be a member of the Waste Management Program in DANR. The dedicated staff of professionals in the Waste Management Program work hard to create and sustain a vision for South Dakota that is prosperous and diverse in clean air, clean water, and healthy families. What you will do:
As part of the Waste Management Program, you will play an important role in implementing waste management regulatory policies to protect human health and the environment. Our team works with South Dakota businesses, industries, and communities to promote and sustain economic development in an environmentally responsible manner. This position has responsibilities in both the areas of hazardous waste and asbestos compliance. Specific job duties include inspections at hazardous waste generator facilities and asbestos abatement projects, field investigations at waste-related facilities, asbestos and building demolition compliance, asbestos worker certification compliance, technical report writing, communication with the regulated community, and data collection and management.
Duties may include the following:
- conducting field inspections at hazardous waste facilities, asbestos abatement projects, and building demolitions;
- preparing inspection reports, technical reports, and written correspondence;
- identifying compliance issues and assisting in drafting and decision making for enforcement actions;
- reviewing asbestos abatement and building demolition applications;
- reviewing asbestos worker certification applications, issuing worker certificates, and auditing asbestos training courses;
- organizing and maintaining environmental databases and analyzing environmental data;
- collecting environmental samples, measurements, and information;
- contributing to or recommending changes to procedures, policies, laws, or rules;
- providing technical information and assistance to colleagues, other state and federal agencies, business and industry customers, and members of the public with customer service being a high priority.

This position requires a valid driver's license, frequent daily travel, and occasional overnight travel. Office work will be conducted in a routine office setting. Fieldwork occurs in both indoor and outdoor settings. Normal work hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, fieldwork may result in flexing the work schedule.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A 4-year degree in environmental or physical sciences, and a strong desire to learn, solve problems, and serve the citizens of South Dakota.
We are looking for candidates that have:
- knowledge of environmental, physical, and chemical principals and processes;
- ability to listen attentively and communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing;
- ability to set goals and work independently or in a team setting to achieve them;
- ability to conduct work in a responsible and ethical manner;
- ability to secure and maintain asbestos worker certifications;
- basic computer skills such as Microsoft Office.
Based on the applicant's knowledge, skills, abilities, and work experience, this position may be hired as an Environmental Scientist I or Environmental Scientist II at the appropriate salary for the Environmental Scientist level hired.
