What I liked

I really enjoyed the variety of projects, mentorship from more experienced co-workers, and the encouragement and support for me to gain experience and succeed. I was able to get into the lab to help with a bench test, do water sampling in the field, as well as help with technical reports and calculations.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had gotten a bit more field work initially, but consulting engineering is not always on a easily pre-determined schedule. Additionally, more interaction with the other interns in the company would have been nice.

Advice

Take advantage of the free-market system. You can get opportunities to work on projects that seem interesting to you and speak with different employees across the company, however you have to be willing to put yourself out there and take initiative.

The wide range of project work! And people there really wanted me to succeed.

What I wish was different

Personally I did not get to do as much field work as I would have liked, but that may have been different for other interns.

Advice

Ask questions and reach out to people. Networking within the company is very important.

Chemical Engineer

What I liked

Plenty of opportunity to work on a variety of projects. The collaborative environment really feels like it is one of a kind. The variety of projects means you have to creatively solve problems, while working with engineers from different fields. You also have the ability to choose projects that you are passionate about, and they offer plenty of resources to develop new skills.

What I wish was different

The workload can vary, but as long as you are willing to meet deadlines and reach out to new people you can always find work.

Advice

Be willing to reach out to others about opportunities that interest you. Making connections and finding projects you enjoy working on is very important when working here. Don't be afraid to raise any concerns that you may have, as they are willing to work with you to make sure that you have the best possible experience.

Civil Engineering Intern

What I liked

- Gained valuable experience in Civil 3D software - I loved the atmosphere at Barr and how caring everyone was. Every coworker cares about your well-being, work-wise and personally as well. - I enjoyed being able to work on projects that interested me (renewable energy).

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had some more field experience during my internship, but I was at least able to do a week long site visit in Montana.

Advice

My one piece of advice would be to try and gain experience in Civil 3D or Autocad before the internship. I had some experience, but not much, and it made the first couple of weeks fairly difficult in trying to learn it. However, everyone at Barr was extremely helpful in helping me learn it and get comfortable with it.
